How do I choose a wireless router for my home? [Best Wireless Router Reviews 2021]

Router Reviews

Are you looking for the best wireless router for your home internet connectivity that is reliable, secure, and capable of handling anything you can through at?

Ever since routers began to show up on the market, they have been in high demand, especially nowadays that we need the internet for almost everything.

Due to the advancements in technology whole, routers that are more advanced in terms of speeds and coverage (among other things) have been developed.

As many of us know, routers were not as fast as they are now in the old days. Manufacturers have developed new ways of improving the speed of the routers over these few decades.

On the other hand, consumers now know the characteristics that make a router fast and internet connection secure. This has automatically phased out the slow old routers and has brought a new generation of routers that are built for security and fister fiber internet connectivity. This is why I will be reviewing some of the best routers available on the market today.

In this article, I have put together a list of the top 10 routers of 2021 that you need to check out. Just in case you have no prior knowledge of the factors that make a great router, I will look at the buying guide that I have prepared for you below in step-by-step.

So, How do I choose a wireless router for my home?

When it comes to selecting a router, either for your home or office use, you may feel like flying a plane is way easier (Don’t get it the wrong way, I’m not saying that flying a plane is hard). There are so many digits and details that you need to know about a router that can make the job a lot harder, particularly if you are a beginner.

Besides this, the name of the router is simply not enough to know how good the router is, neither is the money that you spend on the router.

As such, you also need to go for the one that will match your budget without sacrificing speed, power or any other important characteristics that a router should have.

To know more about the features to look for in routers, here is a guide that will help you select the best one yet.

Get Router With Multi-core Processor And Fast RAM Processor

As you choose the hardware for your wireless router, keep in mind that Faster CPUs are generally better and may increase your home internet performance. Sadly, the majority of all internet lagging reported by online gamers, RAM is typically the culprit as this is where most routers fail. So, if you are shopping around for the best router for your home internet, make sure to find one with the best RAM capacity.

Routers with more and faster RAM tend to handle more threads, which is especially important if you have a lot of network traffic going back and forth. Most of our homes are fast becoming more imaginatively connected through the internet of things, and many devices or even torrenting require fast and resilient routers now than ever.

Advanced Quality Of Service: Why is Quality of Service QoS important?

Your next wireless router must have an advanced QoS that ensures that your home internet connectivity still enjoys the highest-priority workloads get through first without slowing down when there isn’t enough capacity.

Though live-testing your actual internet speed for your area helps, but having an advanced QoS feature in your wireless router also makes sure that routing priorities don’t change as any slight QoS changes can lead to jitter, data loss and latency. But it has to be enforced all the way to the end of the network path.

Does it have a USB port? Is it a USB 3.0 port?

A good router must have a USB port, especially when we have a lot of USB devices that we can connect to the router like printers, USB modems, and external hard disks others.

The USB port should preferably be the one that is USB 3.0. Some routers have one USB port, while some more expensive routers have a couple of ports.

Is it a Dual-band router?

Routers of the old days had been single-band routers. If you are planning to buy a good router, go for the one that is at least dual-band or above. So what’s the difference?

The router broadcasts the wireless signal on two frequencies when we say dual-band, while a single band router only broadcasts on one frequency.

Tri-band routers are also available.

One of the frequencies is always the 2.4 GHz band. This band rate works with the old wireless standards, like Wi-Fi 4, for instance. What makes the 2.4 GHz great is that it is compatible with old networking devices and that it has a wide coverage area.

The only downfall is that it is very slow and has problems with congestion from time to time when used.

Dual-band or tri-band routers emit their wireless signal on the 5GHz frequency. The 5 GHz is much faster than 2.4 GHz. In such frequencies, congestion is not much of a problem because the 5 GHz band is used less than the 2.4 GHz one, and the coverage area is a bit shorter.

If you are looking for a router with a fast wireless network for Full HD streaming as well as gaming without lagging, I recommend a dual-band or tri-band wireless router.

Does it have advanced features?

Some routers are equipped with advanced features like firewalls, VPN servers, antivirus, and other features designed to protect the network from attacks.

While this might be a great thing, a lot of routers have hardware that can’t handle such features. For this, I suggest that you get a more expensive router, preferably the one that has a bigger RAM besides broadcasting the Wi-Fi network. Speaking of RAM,

Your router should have lots of RAM.

It is very important that your router should have a lot of RAM to run things smoothly. RAM is just as important on your router as it is on your computer because the Wi-Fi handles a lot of activities, from video streaming to online gaming. When you select your router, choose the one that has 256 MB or more, but it should never be less than 128 MB.

Besides the RAM, it is also important that your router should know if it has a single-core, dual-core or quad-core processor.

You have to choose a router that has at least a dual-core or quad-core processor. It is faster and it can cope with several devices at a time.

Router Security Features (WPA2)

Whether you are using a wireless access point, a router, a modem, or a combo (which is a gadget that has combined features of a router and a modem, hence it is called a modem router), security should be your topmost priority.

When you have security features in your router, you are likely to be safe from attackers that mainly attempt to penetrate the network in hopes of downloading your data- your private data.

Also, when you have secured your network, you will be keeping it safe from anyone who is attempting to connect to it. If people are just connecting without the security feature, network congestion will most likely occur.

This will eventually cause the internet to be slow, which can really ruin your experience.
